After reaching an agreement with EU member states on the content of the bill in 2022, the European Parliament ended up with 340 votes in favor, 279 against, and 21 abstentions. The passed bill aims for zero emissions by 2035 for the sales of fuel-powered cars and vans in Europe.
The goal of this agreement is to stop the sale of new fossil fuel-powered cars and vans in at least 27 countries in the EU starting in 2035. With a 15-year lifespan for the average vehicle, this agreement ensures that the EU will achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The agreement also requires that CO2 emissions from new vehicles be reduced by at least 55 percent in 2030 compared to 2021. This requirement is stricter than the current target of 37.5%. Also, when compared to 2021, vans will need to reduce emissions by half by 2030 and achieve full reductions by 2035.
The agreement reflects that Europe is speeding up the development process of the new energy industry to get rid of oil energy, which is in line with both geopolitical factors and world development trends. The development of the Li-ion battery industry in Europe is also expected to speed up.
